Hello unto you.
It seems a good time as any to announce my band Black Love to a wider audience. The songs from our first single can be found here:
http://www.myspace.com/blackloveglobal
First Black Love live actions happen at The Smell in Los Angeles in early 2009, the entire experience of which can be most succinctly described as Robert Palmer transforming into a deck of tarot cards. Rather noisily, I should add. Our fans are called Black Lovers. Wouldn’t you like to be a Black Lover, too?
And now, here’s David Lynch with the weather: http://www.davidlynch.com/dailyreport/

From: Kevin Thorne

“It’s the 25th anniversary of the release of the We Be Echo cassettes “Ceza Evi” and “Ceza Evi Special Edition” (featuring Genesis P. Orridge and Iham on Tibetan thighbone trumpet on “Inside Life’s Wire”). To celebrate, Mike Honeycutt of Mystery Hearsay and I have digitized the tracks from both tapes and I am pleased to announce the release of “Ceza Evi – Unleashed and Revisited”, a CD containing both albums. There will be 143 copies made, each individually numbered.
The CDs can be ordered from http://www.tdftl.com from December 1st 2008. Orders can be reserved now using the form on the website. CDs are $15 Canadian, plus postage. There’s 32 tracks, over two-and-a-half hours of music (including three ultra-rare tracks), packaged with a high quality cover.”

CROUTON NEWSPAPER: NOVEMBER 2008
Final Edition: November 16, 2008
http://www.croutonmusic.com
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“All things must come to an end.
After 10 years and over 40 releases, Crouton will be closing. There are many people who
without their help, none of this would have been possible. Even those simply reading
these messages took part in something that consumed a big part of my life, and for that,
I thank you. Those that supported the label by buying releases, I can’t thank you enough,
and hope you’ve enjoyed them as much as I have. Very special thanks also to Chris Rosenau, Scott Kawczynski, Jim Schoenecker, Andrew McKenzie, Hal Rammel, Dan Warburton, Tom Wincek, Jason Kahn, Bhob Rainey, Patrick Monaghan, Evangelinos Evangelos, Frans de Waard, Jochen Schwartz, Jerome Noetinger, Jimmy Johnson, and all the artists I’ve been able to work with over the years. These people helped in many ways to make the label possible, and the relationships were truly a pleasure.
Croutonmusic.com will remain active into 2009, and orders placed through the site will be filled with the same promptness as usual. However, no new titles will be produced. At an undetermined time, the site will be closed, and the remaining releases will no longer be available.
Thanks again to everyone for their interest and support over the years. It’s been a great
pleasure to be a part of this music.
Take care,
Jon”
Subject: electronic music project 1980-1989
From: Andrew Szava-Kovats
“Electronic Music Network scene from 1980-1989
In my mind, no other period went through as much of a transformation of the music industry. In particular, the formation of a network of like-minded electronic artists never existed prior to that time. This is just an idea, and I’m sure it will evolve as we all collaborate. It is as much your project as mine. The finished product would be a DVD with a central narrative movie and “Bonus Features” that would include discographies, bios, photos, etc.
So, what do I need from you all to get started?
1 – Rummage through your attics and basements and pull together any photos, promotional graphics, video tapes, audio recordings that you feel represent your work from that time period. Please focus only on that period. Forward your selections to me (either electronically or hard copies, as you prefer). All materials will be returned to you.
2 – After I have a list of participants, I will send it to everyone on the list.
3 – Look over the list and prepare interview questions you’d like to ask any and / or all of the other people. My preference would be that you direct your questions to a particular person on the list. The idea is to create a “round table” discussion, with everyone interviewing each other in writing. Most of us know each other, so the questions can be directed more toward the individual, rather than being “generic”. Then forward the questions to me, to coordinate with others.
4 – I will forward interview questions to each of you.
5 – Everyone should read and respond to the questions on video. Or, if you prefer not to video tape yourself, make an audio recording of your response. The idea is to get a human feel to the responses, not just written.
6 – Prepare a complete discography of your work. You can include everything up to present day. A simple text file would be the best format.
7 – Prepare a biography of yourself. Again, simple text file is best. Be as general or detailed as you like.
8 – Think about what made this time unique in your life and in the history of music.
I’m sure we’ll all think of other things as we go…and the interviews should bring up issues that may pull this in a different direction. I’m not sure where this is headed, but that’s up to you all. Welcome aboard!
MICHAEL SNOW – retrospective screenings
“Reverberlin” (2006, 55 minutes, video)
“Featuring Paul Dutton, John Oswald and Michael Snow. New York premiere. Using concert footage of CCMC, the free improvisational ensemble Snow co-founded in 1974, the filmmaker/musician digitally weaves together images and sounds from performances that have taken place across the globe. “I desired an equivalence of seeing and hearing so that one could actually listen, pay attention to the music, as well as follow the picture development,” Snow writes.
“La Région Centrale” (1971, 180 minutes, 16mm)
“Made over the course of five days on a deserted mountaintop in North Quebec, the vertical and horizontal alignment as well as the tracking speed of Snow’s equipment was all determined by the camera’s settings. Anchored to a tripod, the camera turned a complete 360 degrees, craned itself skyward, and circled in all directions. Because of the unconventional camera movement, the result was more than merely a document of the film location’s landscape, as its themes became the cosmic relationships of space and time.”
ENSEMBLE MAE – “Licht is de Machine” (after an idea by Joost Rekveld, composer: Martijn Padding, director: Paul Koek, dramaturgy: Paul Slangen)
“Presented on the airport Valkenburg in Katwijk, promises to be a very exciting programme. Light is the Machine is both a gigantic visual installation as a music theatre performance. In the performance light presents her beauty but also her blinding flipside. The audience is taken on a trip along old utopian worlds, sad dreams and personal desire: sometimes in the form of an intimate concert, at other times in a visual surrounding, in which the audience, technicians, musicians and actors all share the floor. Light is the Machine is the first cultural project on the former Airport Valkenburg, Katwijk, commissioned by Kunstgebouw Zuid-Holland.”
LOUISE BOURGEOIS – retrospective
“This comprehensive exhibition is the first major survey of American artist Louise Bourgeois (b. 1911, Paris, France) work in more than a decade. Bourgeois’s long and distinguished career reveals a vast oeuvre in dialogue with most of the major international avant-garde artistic movements of the 20th century – from surrealism to conceptual art – but always remaining distinctively separate, as an inventive frontrunner. Simultaneously engaging both modern and traditional techniques, Bourgeois explores various themes in a range of styles, from abstraction to the ready-made. With over 100 works spanning her career, the exhibition includes her earliest paintings; sculptures in differing materials; large-scale installation works from the 1980s and ‘90s; a selection of drawings and prints; small-scale hand-made objects; and her most recent works, which utilize fabric. A rare opportunity to see many of Bourgeois’ most well-known pieces reunited, the presentation includes Filette (1968), The Blind Leading the Blind (1947-49), and a number of her powerful “Cell” installations, such as Red Room (Parents) (1994) and Red Room (Child) (1994).”
MONIEK DARGE – “Muziekdozen / Music Boxes”
“Moniek Darge’s collection of music boxes tell a poetical audiovisual story, hold tiny sounds, subtle reflections, humour and a little bit of liberating kitsch. She frequently explores flea markets with the purpose of discovering interesting boxes and elements. During the visual design of “Muziekdozen” (Dutch for music boxes), fascinating sounds slowly fill up her ears. The result consists of unique creations in which listeners can imagine an exciting audiovisual universe.”
FRANCISCO GOYA – “Los Caprichos” (exhibition)
“Goya: Los Caprichos features a set of eighty etchings by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya y Lucientes published in 1799 and recognized as one of the most influential series of graphic images in the history of Western art. This early first edition of the complete set of etchings is one of four acquired directly from Goya by the Duke and Duchess of Osuna and is now part of the holdings of the Museo de Zaragoza, Spain. Los Caprichos deals with such themes as the Spanish Inquisition, the corruption of the church and the nobility, witchcraft, child rearing, avarice, and the frivolity of young women. Its cast includes goblins, monks, aristocrats, procuresses, prostitutes, and animals acting like human fools; these personages populate a world on the margins of reason, where no clear boundaries distinguish reality from fantasy.”
“The Headphones Show” (curated by Alan Licht)
“Headphones have become a fact of the urban landscape – the Walkman, Discman, and now iPods have made headphones a ubiquitous presence in the culture of commuters. Headphones are the closest one can come to experiencing sound in the same way as reading silently to oneself. They provide an alternative, handpicked, and disjunctive soundtrack to one’s surroundings. They also block out the sounds of the immediate environment, while keeping the music inaudible to others, preventing listeners and their cohabitants from being disturbed. In this way headphones have come to symbolize isolation as an increasingly common attribute of life in the digital world. “The Headphones Show” brings together recent art works that require headphones to be experienced, acknowledging the rise of sound as an element in visual art, as well as a medium in itself. The works in the show explore shared experience versus private experience, using headphones to signify the daily reconciliations of interior and exterior worlds in everyday life.”
FELIX THORN – “Felix’s Machines”
“‘Felix’s Machines’ are a series of extraordinary mechanical instruments put together by the artist and musician Felix Thorn in his South London bedroom. The project, which began in 2006, is continuously evolving and will do so throughout and after its time at Gasworks. During the exhibition, musicians and producers will respond to ‘Felix’s Machines’ in a series of events exploring its musical potential. When connected to a computer, ‘Felix’s Machines’ translate Thorn’s compositions into mechanical actions performed by customised drums and piano parts and animated by solenoids, springs and motors. In this way, an electronic means of production is transposed into an acoustic output. Each element of the machine has its own light emitting diode (LED). In the darkened space of the gallery, this creates an arrangement of coloured projections illuminating the sound source and synchronised with the music.”
PHILIP SAMARTZIS (a.o.)
“Transcentric: Across, Beyond, Between and Within” (exhbition)
“TRANSCENTRIC is a collection of works across a range of media by artists associated with RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia and the University of the Arts London. The works in the exhibition move across, beyond, between, and within city centres. As such they are concerned with phenomena that we might think of as ‘urban’, however this is interpreted not only in terms of spatial relationship, but also considers how the urban centre resonates with overlapping themes arising from social, environmental, geographical, political and other forces. Many of the works are concerned with the particularities of the aesthetics of writing and re-writing urban space, while others reflect on associations emanating from and within the centre such as the symbolism of architecture, the structures of belief systems, mortality in the modern world, the relationship of the centre to the periphery, the spaces in-between, and the weather.”
