Hello unto you.

Vastly entertaining for about seven minutes this past Saturday was performing my “Tape Music” composition in audition at REDCAT in Los Angeles. A literalist piece, it was undertaken alongside longtime \\\ member Sergio Segovia in a new dynamic I’m calling Dys-, in total darkness using that little-known performance dynamic known as “boredom” – which is to say, when it seemed as though the piece had become tiresome, we stopped. This performance of “Tape Music” included freezer tape, duct tape, carpet tape, scotch tape measuring tape, masking (and backward-masking) tape, and the sound of a TI-99 tape of “Mission Impossible,” which was never meant to be played outside of the computer world but makes a brilliant racket and shall be released under the Dys- banner on Hertz-Lion before long. Unclear if we’ll be performing it again but it’s always fun to blow minds and flip wigs using the simplest of devices in the strangest of places, so one never knows!

Frank Mundus
Shark fisherman widely thought to be the inspiration for the hero in Jaws.

There was one major difference between the Captain Quint played by Robert Shaw in Steven Spielberg’s 1975 blockbuster Jaws, and Frank Mundus, the shark fisherman on whom the character was thought to be based. Mundus, who has died aged 82, was far more flamboyant. Sporting a diamond-stud earring, shark-tooth dagger and matching necklace, often with the nails of his big toes painted red and green, for port and starboard, Mundus was a fixture in the Long Island port of Montauk, a self-promoter whose role as the “Monster Man” did not always endear him to his fellow fishermen, but whose reputation as the world’s foremost catcher of sharks attracted hordes of tourists to the once-sleepy town.

Born in Long Branch, New Jersey, Mundus contracted a marrow infection in a broken arm which left it stunted. When his father, a steamfitter, moved the family to Brooklyn, doctors encouraged his parents to take him to the beach to exercise by swimming. He fell in love with the ocean and, when he was old enough, left school to work as a freight handler, and then as a crewman on charter fishing boats. In 1951 he bought his own boat, the 42ft Cricket, named because friends thought he resembled Jiminy Cricket in Disney’s Pinocchio. Bluefish were the prize sport off Long Island, but when Mundus caught one of the many sharks swarming around, someone called it “a monster”, and he began a new business. “I started shark fishing as a joke,” he recalled. “I called it ‘monster fishing’ to attract customers. It was poor man’s big-game fishing.”

His notoriety grew when, in 1961, he harpooned a great white just off the popular beach at Amagansett, watched by hundreds of beach-goers. He caught another, but claimed that “the local chamber of commerce kept it hush-hush because they didn’t want to scare the tourists”. Three years later, with two sharks already brought in, he was battling a third on a reel when he harpooned a fourth, another great white that weighed more than 2,000kg (around 4,500lb). The publicity attracted Peter Benchley to Mundus, and the novelist, who published Jaws in 1974 and co-wrote the screenplay for the movie, made many trips on the Cricket. Although Benchley praised Mundus’s skill, calling him “one of the last, great colourful fishermen”, he always insisted Mundus was not the inspiration for Quint, who was a composite character. In the sense that Quint drew on Melville’s Captain Ahab from Moby-Dick, and Herman Wouk’s Captain Queeg from The Caine Mutiny, Benchley was, of course, correct. But any number of Montauk locals testified that Mundus’s influence on Quint was obvious, not least his habit of tying empty barrels to the harpoons he launched at the sharks.

Mundus offended much of the Montauk fleet by shooting sharks to finish them off, or harpooning whales to use their blubber in the chum he spread to attract sharks. But as sport fishing became more ecological, Mundus began to use more shark-friendly circle hooks, participated in tagging, and started catch and release excursions. In 1986 he made his greatest catch, using rod and reel to capture a record 17ft great white, weighing 1,554kg (3,427lb). But after the US coastguard established written exams for fishing captains, Mundus refused to be tested. In 1991 he retired to a lemon farm in Hawaii, where he raised pigs and sheep with his second wife, an Englishwoman, Jeanette Hughes, whom he had met through correspondence and married in 1988. He returned to Montauk each summer as a celebrity host on boats skippered by others, billed as the world’s greatest shark fisherman. His boat, Cricket II, had been refurbished by film producers interested in shooting a documentary, and last year he captured a shark whose tail had knocked him to the deck, using his gaff to hook it and lift it aboard.

Mundus suffered two heart attacks and died in Hawaii soon after returning from his annual trip to Montauk. He is survived by his wife and three children from his first marriage, which ended in divorce. He always regretted not being acknowledged by the creators of Jaws. “All I ever wanted was a thank you,” he said. “If [Benchley] just would have thanked me, my business would have increased. Everything he wrote was true, except I didn’t get eaten by the big shark. I dragged him in.”

“Greetings from all of the subhumans here at Trogotronic.

We are careful to write to you no more than twice a year as we are also victims of countless attempts upon or attentions at all hours of the day. Last year we only wrote once and this is our very first transmission to those of you unlucky enough to have been included oun our mailing list in this year known in the western world as 2008. If you’ve any luck it will be our last. We humbly and sincerely appreciate your time and attention, and hope that the following will be of some interest to you. We are (sub)-humans not machines; if you should have any questions or concerns in regard to this information please write or call us, we answer both devices PERSONALLY and will act accordingly with all due respect.

ELECTRON WRANGLERS. SPARK PLUMBERS. Not exactly a “clean” form of employ; toxic fumes, angry neighbors and melting ice-caps all byproducts of the lowly analog audio artisans’ pursuit for organic electronic imperfection. While some of the greatest minds of our day are spending time perfecting and then producing a 15 watt guitar amp for 5000 bucks we have been humbly serving the pursuit of the working man’s ear.

And what does the working man’s ear hear?

“MORE KNOBS FOR OUR MONEY!”
“MORE BANG FOR OUR DWINDLINGLY VALUED DOLLARS!”
“AUDIO DEVASTATION TO MATCH THE BRUTALITY OF THESE END-TIMES OF SHAMELESS CORPORATE GREED THAT ONLY LEND CREDENCE TO THE PLOT LINE OF SOYLENT GREEN!”

As your humble servants of sound we reply: “Your wish is our obsession.”

Furthermore: “May we present to you our earnest offering of the Trogotronic Model Triple-6?”

“Composer Mauricio Kagel dies in Germany at 76

BERLIN (AP) — Argentine-born composer Mauricio Kagel, whose experimental body of work also ranged into theater, has died September 18 in Germany, his publisher said Thursday. He was 76. The C.F. Peters musical publishing house said Kagel died overnight in Cologne following a long illness, but did not give details on the cause of death. Kagel was born in Buenos Aires on Dec. 24, 1931, into a Jewish family of German-Russian origin.

A self-taught composer who learned to play instruments including the piano, organ and cello, he studied literature and philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires and at age 18 became an adviser to an avant-garde group, Agrupacion Nueva Musica. In 1955, he rose to become a director at the Argentine capital’s Teatro Colon. Two years later, he went on a student grant to Germany, where he settled — working in chamber and electronic music. His musical theater piece “Sur Scene” — first performed in 1960 — established a genre of “instrumental theater” that became a prominent part of his work.

Kagel was known for a humorous approach to art, with works such as “Fantasie fuer Orgel and Obligati,” which included a toilet flush as an instrument.

Information on survivors and funeral arrangements was not immediately available.”

“Hello dear agents. ¡Saludos estimados agentes!

This autumn sees our Origami 18-year anniversary, to be celebrated somewhere in Berlin on Friday, October 24.

I have lost contact with a bunch of you, for various reasons. One is that a lot of my mailings seem to go directly to your spam-folders. I am now trying to reconnect with this fresh new address. Remember that a lot of new people want to take part in the Origamism; releases and concerts take place around the world all the time, and through some language exercises we now can potentially connect with 400 million people more. Day-by-day our archive expands, now counting some 600+ pages. Yes, information overload. No, nobody is meant to go through them all, as it is meant to be a public archive. You don’t criticise a library because you haven’t read all the books in it, or maybe you do?

Your coordinator, tu amigo en el sur, Boe!”

ULRICH KRIEGER & LOU REED – “Unclassified”
“Rock music icon Lou Reed and sonic experimentalist Ulrich Krieger take the stage together for the first time to improvise music and make soundscapes. The pair use guitars, saxophones and an array of electronic treatments to venture into deep acoustic space, drawing on new music, free jazz, avant-rock, noise and ambient in a set of intense conceptual pieces and intuitive improvisations. The artists first met in 2002 for the premiere of Krieger’s transcription and arrangement of Metal Machine Music – Reed’s seminal guitar feedback epic – for the chamber orchestra Zeitkratzer. More recently, Reed has been touring a new stage version of his 1973 rock oratorio Berlin, a work that was the subject of the stunning concert film by Julian Schnabel released this summer. Krieger, who has collaborated with artists from Reed and Lee Ranaldo to Phill Niblock and Merzbow, has been a member of CalArts’ music faculty since last fall.”

WILLEM de RIDDER – “Fluxusfilm Anthology”
“There’s some famous pairs of buttocks in there, white light, x-rays, tennis courts and films from artists such as NAM JUN PAIK, YOKO ONE, PAUL SHARITS and JOHN CALE. Over short films ranging from 10 seconds to 10 minutes in length, this is the closest you’ll ever be able to snuggle up with GEORGE MACIUNAS (1931-1978, founder of Fluxus)’s complete FLUXFILM anthology. And making this happening just that little more intimate, Mr. Willem de Ridder whom Maciunas appointed chairman of FLUXUS for Northern Europe) will be present and active and apparent.”

SEPTEMBER 12 – OCTOBER 11
R. LUKE DuBOIS – “Politics As Usual” (exhibition; New York debut of “Hindsight is Always 20/20”)
“Commissioned by the City of Denver and opening August 23, the U.S. Democratic National Convention will premiere forty-three free standing outdoor light boxes in the Hindsight is Always 20/20 series. The same day in Minneapolis–St. Paul, host city of the U.S. Republican National Convention, an exhibition of the forty-three letterpress prints will open at the Weisman Art Museum at the University of Minnesota. Hindsight is Always 20/20 examines the history of American political discourse through the metaphor of vision. Drawing from the annual State of the Union (SOTU) addresses given by Presidents to Congress, ‘Hindsight’ consists of a single Snellen-style eye chart for each president who gave SOTU addresses. Instead of the typical characters present in an eye chart, the piece employs words drawn from their speeches, presented in order of most frequent (top line) to least frequent (bottom line) word. The result is a startlingly clear snapshot of the lexicon of each presidency, containing a mix of historically topical keywords and rhetoric unique to each president and the time period in which they served in office.”

SEPTEMBER 15 – OCTOBER 14
BROWN SIERRA – “New River” (installation)
For “Telephone” Brown Sierra are using public telephone boxes as fixed access microphones – as devices to record the sounds of different times and places directly into a standard domestic answering machine – and making these recordings available to any other telephone in the world for the duration of the exhibition. Brown Sierra will be making recordings from phone boxes in the New River Ward in North-East London, where they live. The minimum amount of money to make a call will be inserted into the public phone, a number dialed, and the receiver held outside the phone box. The sound of that location will be remotely and directly recorded into “Telephone”. Each time “Telephone” is called, a recording will be heard. During the course of the exhibition, recordings will change periodically, giving new sounds from different locations. Taken together the recordings will constitute a sound map of the New River Ward. “Telephone” is a curatorial project by Claire Davies and Sam Gathercole. The works presented at “Telephone” will be sound works. No material will mediate the work: there will be no ‘gallery entrance’ or introduction; there will be no ‘label’ for the work. The caller will hear only the work. A telephone call has a particular (and peculiar) spatial and temporal quality. It is, simultaneously, something like a real space of (sometimes) live interaction, and also a virtual space entered by the caller. This space, with all its ambiguities, is one that offers a great potential for the presentation of artwork.”

SONIC YOUTH – “Sensation Fix” (exhibition)
“Focuses on the multidisciplinary activities of the groundbreaking experimental group Sonic Youth since its formation in 1981. It features the band’s collaborations with visual artists, filmmakers, designers and musicians, as well as a choice of other works selected by the band. Through the multidisciplinary output of Sonic Youth and related works by other artists in the exhibition, an alternative history of contemporary culture is being uncovered in which the division between “high art” and “low art” is being called into question, while issues are explored such as teenage rebellion, adolescent wanderlust, gender, fame, fashion, sexuality, and religion.”
