Hello unto you.
My review of the new Sigur Rós album can be found in the most recent issue of Earplug: http://www.earplug.cc/169550
Also, is anyone here currently living in Bologna? I have a question about sound poet Patrizia Vicinelli, born and died after a reportedly hard life, in Bologna.

Greetings to all,
I am very happy to report that on Monday July 14, Gary successfully had the hole in his throat surgically closed. It had been there since his tracheotomy tube was removed on June 14, 2006. Usually the hole would close up naturally over time, but for some reason Gary’s remained open. This is a big step in Gary’s recovery and I was surprised to learn that after the surgery he was talking right away, even though his throat felt “raw” (as he told me when I asked how it felt). He still can be difficult to understand, but already his pronunciation is growing more distinct.
Meanwhile Gary still wishes to return to California and I hope we’ll hear something about how that could be accomplished soon.
On the other hand Gary is having some good times as these photos from the July 4th weekend show. Gary’s cousin Ruth visited from Iowa and the family went to the lake to do some sailing. Here is what she had to say: “My mom and dad (Gary’s aunt and uncle), my sisters and brother were all able to see Gary. We had a nice visit for several hours. My brother in law Bob took us out for a boat ride and we had a really nice time. I asked Gary if he wanted to drive the boat, and initially he said no, but a few minutes later, he stood up, tapped Bob on the shoulder and wanted to drive! HE DID AWESOME!!! He drove it all by himself (with occasional ‘you need to turn more left” instructions). He even sped the boat up a few times (my mom almost had a heart attack!). He really enjoyed himself. He drove for about 20-30 minutes and seemed to have a great time.”
That’s it for now. I have a short video clip I received from one of the people that works for the company that runs the house where Gary is now, and once I’m sure it is both Mac and PC compatible I will forward it on.
-Michael”

My buddy says he got his hands on a copy of that film and it’s not the source. I have no way of knowing whether he’s lying or not, but perhaps you could throw the question to yr list, unless that seems too crass.

“Call for proposals
SMart is a socio-professional organisation supporting artists on a logistic, administrative and legal level. To celebrate its 10th anniversary SMart is organizing the SMartival, a festival for its 20000 members and for the general audience. The SMartival takes place from 22.11.2008 until 29.11.2008, at the Pathe Palace in Brussels. Foton is responsible for the conceptualization and the artistic program of the SMartival. Within this framework we are launching a call for projects, based on the following conditions:
Artistic program:
- the SMartival is a multi- and interdisciplinary event: music, film, dance, theater, circus, installations, fine arts…all artistic disciplines as well as their hybrid forms are welcome
- first of all the SMartival wants to be a place and a moment in time where support, encounters and exchange between artists, the general audience and the SMart-crew prevail: the event is open to all artistic proposals containing these elements of interactivity, no matter what their format might be (performances, installations, workshops, …)
Anonymous auction:
- whether you are an artist or not, whether you are world famous or not, just send us your own artistic creation, to be sold during our anonymous auction…the day of the auction you might return home with a real Tuymans without realising it.
Send your project proposals for the artistic program to:
hans [at] foton [dot] be / SMart asbl – c/o Hans De Man – Emile Feronstraat 70 – 1060 Brussels
Send a short description and a couple of pictures of your artistic creation for the auction to: hans [at] foton [dot] be. We will get in touch with you afterwards to discuss sales conditions.”

As many others I’m looking for a place to live, preferably very small, short-term and expensive, but I’ll settle for the very opposite too…so let me know.. anything – in Amsterdam – with a roof will do. Sharing or whatever is fine.

“Since a few weeks, the CCAM encounters a series of economical and political difficulties. The City of Vandoeuvre, after a reflection of four weeks, should finally accept, by July the 10th, to grant the guarantee for a loan enabling the structure not to bankrupt in September. The recovery plan that we’ve proposed (without further grants) can finally be applied. We thank here the 3600 signers of the petition (ccam.mollo.fr) and the 400 authors of support letters. Everyone has not forgotten the notion of public utility and it’s a pleasure to notice it. However, an actual pursuit of activity supposes further means estimated to 90,000, a sum we have a lot of problems to find since two years through the usual ways of public aid. That’s why we decided to appeal to the participation of our main interlocutors, these citizens, artists, technicians, administrators or teachers, visitors, spectators; it means our main partners are able to understand the reality of the work done in Vandoeuvre since almost thirty years. Each subscriber will naturally become a member of AUCCAM, a totally independent society which represents the users in the national theater’s board of trustees, along with me, in this sometimes complex dialogue with the State (Minister of Culture), the Lorraine Region Authority and the City of Vandoeuvre.
Dominique Répécaud
CCAM director. “

MASTER MUSICIANS OF JOUJOUKA – Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival
“To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones’s visit to their village, Morocco’s most renowned Sufi trance Masters, The Master Musicians of Joujouka, are staging a music festival in his honour on 29 July, in Joujouka, Morocco. Joujouka is a tiny village in the southern Rif Mountains of Morocco founded by the 8th century Sufi mystic Sidi Ahmed Scheich. It is famous for its Sufi trance music, its connections with the Beat Generation and the Rolling Stones, and its annual celebration of the God Pan. On 29th July 1968, following in the footsteps of William Burroughs, Robert Palmer and Paul Bowles; Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and recording engineer George Chkiantz visited Joujouka with Brion Gysin and Mohamed Hamri to record an album with the Master Musicians. Jones spent much of his last year mixing and producing the Joujouka tapes and preparing the cover art. He died on 7 July 1969. The resulting LP “Brian Jones presents the Pipes of Pan at Joujouka” was the first release on Rolling Stones Records in 1971. In Joujouka the villagers still perform the ancient Rites of Pan. A boy sewn in goatskins dances wildly to the music of the Masters. This music and festival is called Boujeloud, or the Father of Skins in Joujouka. It is a fertility rite directly related to the ancient worship of the God Pan. Pan was evoked in the springtime to ensure the fertility of both the crops and the people. The people of Joujouka have kept this ancient tradition alive. The evening and night will be devoted to the healing trance music of Joujouka. There will be a full performance of the Boujeloud Rite in honour of Brian Jones. The Master Musicians of Joujouka 2006 CD Boujeloud features various variations on the ritual music associated with Pan. In his short stay in Joujouka Brian Jones made a big impression on the musicians. To this day the song “Brian Jones Joujouka very Stoned” sung in English and Arabic, is a standard at all ceremonies and celebrations in the village. To commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Brian Jones’s visit to their village the Master Musicians of Joujouka are staging a festival to honour Brian Jones memory and his efforts to raise them and their fathers out of poverty. Guests will be transported to the village from the nearest town Ksar El Kebir. They will stay in the village in traditional Joujouka houses with musicians and their families. In the afternoon there will be a visit to the 8th century sanctuary of Joujouka’s patron saint Sidi Ahmed Schiech and to the cave of Pan/Boujeloud. This is an once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience a day and night in Joujouka as guests of the Master Musicians of Joujouka and their families in their mountain village. Master Musician of Joujouka Ahmed Attar recalls Jones’ visit in 1968 “I was a twelve years old learning drumming with my father and the Mallims (Masters) when Brian Jones came. Brian Jones was very good. My father played rhiata with and for him and I danced and played my drum. He came with Hamri and Brion Gysin. He had long hair and he rubbed my head. He brought a lot to Joujouka. Besef Baraka. We will mark the 40th Anniversary of his visit here in Joujouka to honour Brian Jones and to let people come to Joujouka and see what it is like here for themselves. It is good to feel the Baraka (Blessings) of Sidi Ahmed Scheich. Joujouka is his country. He is the Cultivator with Lions and Healer of Crazy Minds.” Full board will be provided: lunch on arrival on the 29th, a celebratory feast in the evening including charcoal roasted whole sheep and a wide variety of mountain dishes including many vegetarian specialties. Traditional breakfast will be provided on the morning of the 30th. All the dishes will be prepared by the villagers and will be traditional Moroccan fare for a celebratory feast.”

PAUL ZONE – “The New York Underground Scene From Glam to Punk 1972-1977” (photography)
“From from CBGB’s, Max’s Kansas City and the Warhol Factory to Glam Rock and the early Punk scene, this exhibition features larger-than-life legends like The Ramones, New York Dolls, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Patti Smith and a very early KISS. Paul Zone has a background that took in all that was cool, all that was cutting edge about New York City in the 1970s. He is New York through and through. His two older brothers started to take him to concerts by the age of 11. He’d always make sure to have his square box Brownie camera with him. He saw Bowie premiere Ziggy Stardust at Carnegie Hall, Iggy Pop & The Stooges at the Electric Circus in 1971, the first ever performances by The New York Dolls at the Mercer Arts Center and was the youngest boy let into the back room of Max’s Kansas City during the tail end of the Warhol Factory era. Zone was friends with members of Blondie and The Ramones before their bands were even formed. By 1973 his brothers already had their own band called The Fast, and Paul, being so young, wasn’t considered to be a member. Paul concentrated on taking photographs of his nights out at concerts, clubs and parties around town. He shot the first photo session of Blondie as a five-piece band, did portraits of friends and worked as a photographer along side Lance Loud on his writing assignments for Circus Magazine, Rock Scene & Andy Warhol’s Interview.”
