Hello unto you.

Richie Hass, member of Zoogz Rift and vibraphonist with Saccharine Trust, has died:

Also of interest to West Coast natives – the death of Ron Boltz, announcer for 17 years on KTLA (he was the stentorian authority figure announcing the KTLA News at 10 With Hal Fishman):

Subject: New Jim Flora print – Stationmaster’s Daughter
From: Irwin Chusid <irwin [at] jimflora [dot] com>
Date: Tue, 18 Mar 2008 09:34:00 -0400

“Jim Flora Art LLC has released a limited-edition, archival-quality fine art print of a 1940’s Jim Flora painting entitled “The Rape of the Stationmaster’s Daughter.” Throughout his career, the artist — a man of many moods — often explored violent and decadent themes in his fine art; these noir impulses contrasted sharply with his well-known music illustrations and mischievously comic commercial art. Elements from “The Stationmaster’s Daughter” were reproduced on the cover of “The Curiously Sinister Art of Jim Flora” (published by Fantagraphics Books), and the full work was reproduced in the collection. Two prints only have been listed on eBay at the launch price of $250. After these prints sell, the price for subsequent prints will increase.”

“Dronevolk” – screening
“Mr. Brian Miller of Deathbomb Arc dropped off this little DVD one night, and after a short view, we realized the Echo Curio was the only place that could show it. Explore the world of European drone music, with the filmmaker Jef Mertens. “Dronevolk” revolves around four bands that play a prominent role in the ever growing drone and weirdfolk scene in Belgium. Jef Mertens made a selection of musicians to focus his film, not particularly on the scene itself, but more so on the people behind the music, their motivations and of course their MUSIC. From Kiss The Anus Of A Black Cat’s dark and moody folk, Bear Bones, Lay Low’s drone based move to Belgium to Silvester Anfang’s ungoing discussions and Ignatz’ stories of playing on a boat, the film exhibits a certain RAWNESS through stumbling interviews, live footage and exclusive recording sessions. Shot straight to tape March through October 2007, “Dronevolk” serves as a music document for any self-respecting music lover. Expect some musical accompaniment with this substantial film.”

“Paradise Now! Essential French Avant-Garde Cinema, 1890-2008”
“Seven weekends of essential French avant-garde cinema, including an unprecedented selection of pioneering experimental film from the last hundred years, including classics and marvellous surprises, from psychedelia to erotica, via music videos and radical political filmmaking. This season will change your perception of cinema and the world. The theme of each screening is inspired by manifestos written by celebrated Dada provocateurs Marcel Duchamp and Tristan Tzara, and is guaranteed to make you look at the French avant-garde in a new light. Curated by Nicole Brenez, Michael Temple, Michael Witt, Pierre d’Amerval and Laurent Mannoni in association with Tate Modern and La Cinematheque Francaise.”

ALAN KAPROW – “Art as Life” (exhibition)
“The large-scale retrospective spans over five decades of complex and far ranging art production. The exhibition contextualizes the life, works, and philosophy of Kaprow through an investigation of his most famous art form, the “happening,” as well as through his extensive writing, and written and oral histories of Kaprow by others. Girded by the Kaprow archives now owned by the Getty Research Institute, connections between the artist’s work and person are laced loosely together in this show. Artists who knew and worked with Kaprow were either consulted or actually create works that re-cast his core ideas at MOCA, Los Angeles.”

MARCH 30 – MAY 17
RAYMOND PETTIBON – “Thank you for Staying” (exhibition)
“The exhibit brings together a selection of paintings recently made during his EARWAX performance with bassist Mike Watt (from the legendary LA band The Minutemen) live at the museum this past January. The works themselves reference Watt’s bass playing, lyrics and titles from his songs, the southern California landscape, and even the musician’s legendary Ford Econoline. The title of the exhibit references the last painting Pettibon created at EARWAX, a painting of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev with the line “Thank You For Staying” painted above it just as Watt played the last musical notes of the evening. These paintings are now part of the permanent collection of the Riverside Art museum.”
